Savory French Toast

ingredients

  • 4-6 slices of bread, I prefer a thicker cut Italian bread. But whatever bread you have on hand, you can make it work!

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/4 milk

  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1/2 tsp dill

  • 1/4 tsp onion powder

  • If you like a little spice add in a dash of harissa, or hot sauce

  • 1-2 tbsp butter, unsalted

instructions

  1. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter.

  2. Whisk together the egg, milk, cream, and all the seasonings. Including the hot sauce if using.

  3. Dredge one piece of bread in the egg using a fork, make sure the bread has been completely soaked in the egg mixture. Let the excess drip off before adding to the pan.

  4. Cook until the outside is golden brown and crisp and the inside is cooked through. The time will depend upon what type of bread you are using ant the thickness. A thick piece of Italian bread or brioche, about 4 minutes per side. A whole wheat or white sandwich bread, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  5. Repeat with the remaining slices of bread. Remove bread from pan and let the pieces cool slightly. Serve with more butter if desired.
