Mystic Connecticut 48 Hour Travel Guide

The Shipwright’s Daugther

The Shipwright’s Daughter

Two years in a row Brain and I have traveled to Mystic, Connecticut for a quick anniversary getaway. This small seaside town

The Shipwright’s Daughter- If you are looking for more of a fine dining atmosphere with creative bites, this is your place. Brian and I had the pleasure of being treated to a tasting menu that impressed us with every dish. Before we were seated we enjoyed happy hour at the bar. The bartender was so knowledgable and friendly, which made ordering a drink a pleasure. We decided to start with a couple of oysters and the Beet Pickled Deviled Eggs. Brian and I both couldn’t get over these eggs, super creamy with a crispy clam nestled on top. It really set the tone for the wonderful meal to come.

We were informed the menu changes daily, depending upon what is available locally. The menu is very seasonal and detailed. We started with the Tiger Fig and Cherry Husk Salad accompanied by fennel and tangy lemon yogurt sauce. Our favorite dish, not to be missed was the Grilled 7 Spice Swordfish. Not only was the spice encrusted swordfish delicious but the real treat was the broth. Described as “Crispy Chili Swordfish Jus,” this broth had us drinking every last drop out of the bowl. Then we moved onto the Beef Strip Loin, which was cooked perfectly. The potatoes on the dish were definitely just as special as the meat. It looked like a large steak french fries, however it was the thinnest layers of crispy potato all stacked into one. This made for one incredible crispy bite after another.

The following day we had the pleasure of having a picnic dinner during a sunset cruise aboard the Mamie. We ate too many Old Bay Chips piled high with Smoked Swordfish Dip. They were so crispy and the dip was addictive. We enjoyed traditional Lobster Rolls, along with Corn and Mussel Chowder, which was outstanding. Complete with hot chocolate and glasses of red wine, it could have not been a more perfect evening. The attention to detail that Chef David Standridge lends to his menus makes every dining experience truly memorable.

We will be back for : More Beet Pickled Deviled Eggs, The Swordfish, and to try a seasonal pasta dish.

Nana’s Pizza & Bakery- I almost do not want to tell you about this place, because I am certain the next time we go we will be waiting in one of those lines that wrap around the building. Nana’s has been featured in a number of top publications, all singing their praises. I am here to tell you, rightfully so! The asethic inside reminds you of a chic minimalist cafe you would find in California. However, the outsides has wooden picnic tables nestled in between the parking lot and a pond giving you the perfect place to eat copious amounts of carbs. Those carbs are well worth it and made with organic flour and yeasts. Nana’s is the collaboration between two talented and passionate individuals, Chef James Wayman and his partner Aaron Laipply.

When I first walked in and surveyed the menu I met with overwhelm. I wondered if it was appropriate to order 5 different drinks, donuts, pizza, and do not forget the Heirloom Tomato Sandwich. Well regardless of it was or wasn’t, that is exactly what I did. On the top of our list was the Cacio E Pepe Donut, and I threw in the special of the day, Matcha Sugar. I complimented it with the L.A. Latte, laced with coconut miso caramel, and was sad to leave the summer solstice espresso drink behind. I also put in an order for the New England Clam pizza, I mean when in Rome , right? Being ever influenced by Instagram, I couldn’t shake the vision of the tomato heirloom sandwich I saw posted saw posted on their account.

The Cacio E Pepe Donut was simple yet spectacular at the same time. Piled high with shredded Parmesan cheese and just the right amount of pepper. I was amazed by the crispy edges of the paper thin slices of potatoes that topped the New England Clam pizza. The crust is chewy yet crispy, using local clams and bacon to create a pie that makes you feel as though you stopped at a local seafood shack. Then I enjoyed the Heirloom Tomato Sandwich. This is simplicity at its best, with the a tangy lemon aioli, gorgeous slices of tomato, between two slices of kamut bread.

The teams commitment to using local artisans, and purveyors shines through in every bite. Their take on classics come with many flavorful surprises. I am looking forward to going back and eating my way through the second half of the menu!

We will be back for : the Matcha Refresher, Mushroom Toast, wings, and the Squash Romanesco Pizza

Grass & Bone- The first time we landed in Mystic we spotted this place, but our time didn’t allow for it. However, this time we were able to sit down for lunch at this epic butcher shop and farm to table restaurant. Another gem from Chef Wayman and his partner Aaron Laipply. They sources animals from local and regional farms. The information of where the meat is sourced from can found alongside the cuts in the display case.

The menu was stacked with options and made it so hard to choose. Ultimately, I could not resist the Butcher Shop Poke Bowl and Brian went with the Pork Carnitas. Last minute I threw in the corn bread at the suggestion of the waitress. To my surprise, this corn bread was the best I have ever had. The maple syrup laced butter with this perfect square of salt resting on top was out of this world! However, the steak tar tar with the crispy rice were equally amazing.

We will be back for : the Huesito Burger, and the rotisserie chicken.

Sift Bakery- We made it to Sift both times we visited Mystic. Their lattes are well made their flavors are seasonal. Their baked goods are gorgeous and you can watch the pastry chefs at work as you wait on line. And yes, there is always a line! The croissants are amazing, truly a work of art. Make sure to not only try the chocolate, but the vegetable as well. The savory vegetable croissant is a welcomed variation to the normally sweet versions. My husband always goes for a piece of whatever quiche they are featuring that day.

We will be back for: A Mystic Cream, and to try their upstairs dinner/lounge area.

Other Experiences to Consider:
Oyster Club- Another standout dining experience. Make sure to check out their Bar & Treehouse for a more casual dining experience, with beautiful views.

Young Buns Doughnuts- Get your donut fix with the Mystic Cream or blueberry cake donut one morning!

Abbott’s Lobster- This is worth the short drive outside Mystic. One of the better lobster shack experiences I have had. The location is idyllic and the lobster deviled eggs make it even better.
